Vassar College confers 660 Bachelor’s degrees and one Master’s degree in its 147th commencement ceremonies, May 22, 2011.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – President Catharine Hill presided today over the 147th Vassar College commencement ceremonies, conferring Bachelor of Arts degrees to 660 graduating students, and the Master of Science degree to one student, at the college’s Outdoor Amphitheater. CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Chip Reid, a Vassar alumnus, delivered the commencement address.

In Vassar’s class of 2011:

  • Sixty-one students were elected to Phi Beta Kappa for overall academic achievement, with majors (some dual) in Art (1), Art History (3), Asian Studies (2), Astronomy (1), Biochemistry (2), Biology (3), Chemistry (1), Chinese (1), Cognitive Science (4), Computer Science (3), Economics (11), English (8), Environmental Studies (2), Film (3), French and Francophone Studies (2), German Studies (2), Hispanic Studies (2), History (1), Independent Program (1), International Studies (1), Italian (2), Japanese (1), Latin American & Latino/a Studies (1), Mathematics (2), Media Studies (2), Medieval & Renaissance Studies (1), Music (1), Neuroscience and Behavior (1), Philosophy (1), Physics (1), Political Science (3), Psychology (5), Religion (1), Russian Studies (1), Science, Technology & Society (1), and Sociology (1).
  • The college’s Phi Beta Kappa Prize for 2011 was awarded to Shouvik Bhattacharya (English and Economics).
  • Twenty-eight graduates were elected to the Sigma Xi national honor society for the sciences, with majors and/or correlate sequences in Astronomy (2), Biochemistry (6), Biology (1), Chemistry (4), Cognitive Science (3), Computer Science (3), Economics (1), English (1), French and Francophone Studies (1), German Studies (2), Greek and Roman Studies (1), Italian (2), Mathematics (3), Neuroscience and Behavior (2), Physics (5), and Psychology (2).
  • Eight graduates were selected for both Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
  • One hundred thirty-two graduates were awarded General Honors.
  • Two hundred fifty departmental honors were awarded to graduates majoring in Africana Studies (2), American Culture (4), Anthropology (4), Art History (8), Art Studio (2), Asian Studies (1), Astronomy (3), Biochemistry (5), Biology (4), Chemistry (5), Chinese (6), Classics: Ancient Societies (1), Classics: Greek (1), Classics: Latin (1), Cognitive Science (7), Computer Science (8), Drama (2), Earth Science (1), Economics (19), English (16), Environmental Studies (4), Film (7), French & Francophone Studies (8), Geography (3), Hispanic Studies (2), History (6), Independent Program (9), International Studies (11), Italian (6), Japanese (3), Jewish Studies (1), Latin American & Latino/a Studies (1), Mathematics (6), Media Studies (6), Medieval and Renaissance Studies (2), Music (8), Neuroscience and Behavior (8), Philosophy (6), Physics (5), Political Science (10), Psychology (13), Religion (3), Russian Studies (2), Science, Technology & Society (2), Sociology (7), Urban Studies (6), and Women’s Studies (2).

Members of the class of 2011 have also been selected for a variety of outside honors, including:

  • Compton Mentor Fellowship (in San Clemente, Ecuador)
  • Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (three participants in Brazil, Thailand, and Vietnam, respectively)
  • Chinese Government Scholarship, for study in China (two participants)
