POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The Biennial Elaine Lipschutz Lecture on Multicultural Issues presents "Women at the Center: Escape from Women's History Month," a lecture by Neal H. Shultz, educator and consultant, on Wednesday, November 7 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in Rockefeller Hall, Room 300 at Vassar College. The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Education, the Vassar College Urban Education Initiative, and the Office of the Dean of Faculty and is free and open to the public.

"Women at the Center" discusses the idea that, in history classrooms, women are marginalized or are conveyed as unusual exceptions or passive extras in the drama of change. Drawing on unforgettable anecdotes, Shultz works to illustrate how and why women have been crucial figures in the mainstreams of history. It will also feature a mini-workshop about how to incorporate a new pedagogy of women into not only classrooms, but boardrooms and kitchens as well.

About Neal H. Shultz

Neal H. Shultz's life's work has been to communicate the thrilling and essential narratives of history by teaching children, teaching teachers, and writing true stories. He specializes in the teaching of the new field of World or "Big" History, as well as integrating economics into a historical narrative, projects for which he was named the National Council for the Social Studies Global Awareness Teacher of the Year in 2006. His other areas of expertise include the teaching of the Holocaust and human rights (New York's Human Rights Teacher of the Year in 1998) and working with new teachers, which he has done at colleges (Vassar College, Hofstra University, and Purchase College at the State University of New York), in national workshops, and in his own classrooms.
