Renowned painter Philip Taaffe will be giving a lecture on his work, Tuesday, March 27, 2007

Tuesday, March 27, 2007
6:00 p.m.
Taylor Hall, room 203.

There is currently an exhibition of his work at the Gagosian Gallery, 980 Madison Avenue, New York City, February 15 – March 31, 2007. In a review of this exhibition featured in The New York Times, March 16, 2007, Roberta Smith states: “ These works serve notice that Mr. Taaffe is one of the best painters of his generation, one who has extended both 1970’s Pattern and Decoration and the 80s practices of appropriation and juxtaposition into new areas.”

In the New York Sun, March 1, 2007, David Cohen writes: “Ornament, in Mr. Taaffe’s work, is at once affirmation and denial: although there is an emotional and sexual energy that recalls the use of ornament by Gustav Klimt, a willingness to submit his motifs to bland regimentation has the nihilistic nonchalance
of Andy Warhol.”

The painting, Ghost Still Life by Philip Taaffe will be on exhibit at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center through at least next Wednesday, March 28, 2007.
