About Sistah Power
The Sistah Power program is a semester-long independent study project that uses African dance, drumming and educational activities to foster sisterhood and empowerment for Vassar students and 9 - 12 year old girls, from the City of Poughkeepsie School District. Each of the seven ALANA students in the program serve as a mentor and is responsible for developing and implementing one educational activity. Sessions are held at the Warring Magnet Academy, in Poughkeepsie and at Vassar College, each Thursday and Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
As part of Vassar students' learning experience, they meet regularly to discuss feminist approaches to community outreach, girls' physical, cultural and emotional development needs and implementation of their educational activities.
Sistah Power is a collaborative effort between the ALANA Center/Campus Life Office, the Women's Studies Program at Vassar College and the Girls Scouts of Dutchess County. The generous sponsorship of the Africana Studies Program adds to the success of the program.
