POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — James Gurney, a landscape painter and creator of the Dinotopia illustrated book series, will discuss Real and Imagined Landscapes on Thursday, November 2, at 5:30 p.m. in Rockefeller Hall 200. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Gurney's three Dinotopia books, a young adult series about an island inhabited by humans and dinosaurs, have sold more than 2.5 million copies. His first book, the New York Times bestseller Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time (1992), was a significant success, as the book was translated into 18 languages in 32 countries, and Gurney's illustrations were exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA. Gurney also designed 17 different postage stamps for the U.S. Postal Service, including the World of Dinosaurs, which sold 219 million stamps. In 2002, Dinotopia was adapted into an ABC miniseries, which won an Emmy award for best special effects.
A Rhinebeck, NY resident, Gurney is also known for his Hudson River landscape paintings, which are featured in the November 2006 issue of American Artist Magazine. He has painted covers for nearly 70 paperback books and illustrated a dozen articles for National Geographic.
