POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Jon Kleinberg, a professor of computer science at Cornell University, will discuss "Modeling the Web, Mining my E-mail, and Other Perspectives on the Information Revolution" on Wednesday, November 1, at 8:00 p.m., in Rockefeller Hall 300. This lecture is free and open to the public.
Kleinberg's research centers around the interface of networks and information, emphasizing the social and information networks in online media. In his "small worlds" theory, Kleinberg introduced the concept of navigability, noting the local component necessary for individuals to make distant connections over a network.
He is the recipient of an NSF Career Award, an ONR Young Investigator Award, research fellowships from the Packard and Sloan Foundations, and teaching awards from the Cornell Engineering College and Computer Science Department and the National Academy of Sciences Award for Initiatives in Research. Recently, Kleinberg was awarded the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize from the International Mathematical Union in 2006, and was granted a highly prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2005.
Kleinberg, who has been on the Cornell faculty since 1996, received an A.B. (1993) from Cornell University and an S.M. (1994) and a Ph.D. (1996) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He held research positions at IBM in the Theory and Computation Group (1995), the Computer Science Principles and Methodologies Group (1996-97), and, since 1998, continues to be a member of the Visiting Faculty Program at the IBM Almaden Research Center.
