POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The student environmental awareness organization Vassar Greens will host a volunteer clean-up of Casper's Kill behind the Route 44 Shopping Center, 59 Burnett Avenue (off Dutchess Turnpike) Poughkeepsie, on Saturday, April 22, from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., in conjunction with Scenic Hudson's eighth annual Great River Sweep. The public is invited to join in and all materials will be provided.
Described by Nobel laureate Toni Morrison as "an act of fierce love," the Great River Sweep is a nine-day event that has united more than 30,000 people from Manhattan to the Adirondacks and removed 300 tons of trash from the Hudson River shorelines, tributaries and public places. Winner of a Waterfront Center "Clearwater Citizens Award" and a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency "Environmental Quality Award," the Great River Sweep has become the Hudson Valley's largest volunteer event.
Established in 1966, Scenic Hudson is an environmental organization and land trust working to protect, preserve and restore the Hudson River and its riverfront as a public and natural resource. By combining coalition building and citizen-based advocacy, Scenic Hudson strives to create environmentally healthy communities, champion economic growth, open up riverfronts to the public, and preserve the valley's inspiring natural beauty.
