POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Vassar College and New York Stage and Film are seeking applicants seventeen years of age and older for the Powerhouse Summer Theatre Apprenticeship Program, to run June 16-July 31. One of the leading programs in the country, young adults seriously considering a career in theater can immerse themselves in a high caliber, student-centered theater training program, held on Vassar's Hudson Valley campus.
Information on the Powerhouse apprentice program is available at http://powerhouse.vassar.edu/training.html, including a downloadable application. Apprentices are selected through faculty and professional recommendations, as well as personal statements, and aspiring playwrights will need to submit a writing sample. For further information, call the Powerhouse program at (845) 437-5902, or e-mail powerhouse@vassar.edu.
Each summer fifty apprentices fill positions for the theater company New York Stage and Film, Vassar's partner in the Powerhouse season. Apprentices create and produce radio plays, table readings, and cafe plays, and run open mike/poetry slams. They work, revise, and read their new plays and direct special projects. By the end of the summer, they form their own theater company and perform productions in Vassar's open-air amphitheater.
Since 1985, Vassar College and New York Stage and Film have offered apprentice-training programs for actors, directors, playwrights, stage managers, and designers. There are also opportunities to perform and produce Shakespearean plays, performed in front of a general audience, and observe professional theater artists at work. The Powerhouse summer program is a unique collaboration between a 144-year old premier liberal arts college and a professional theater company, dedicated to the development and production of new plays. This joint venture enables students to spend six weeks on the Vassar College campus, immersing themselves in a specific theater discipline, and to work alongside some of this country's leading theater practitioners.
