Vassar College Alumna to Speak on Transgender Rights

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY— Transgender-rights activist and Vassar College alumna Kiana Moore '02 will speak on Wednesday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. in Rockefeller Hall, Room 300. Her visit coincides with Vassar's effort to revise its non-discrimination policy to include gender identity and gender expression. This event is free and open to the public.

Moore's activism has focused on transgender/transsexual inclusion and acceptance. While a student at Vassar, Moore worked as the head intern in Blegen House, the lesbian and gay center for the study of social change. Since then, she has worked extensively with the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (SMYAL) in Washington, D.C., a service organization dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, inter-sex, and questioning youth as they mature from adolescence into adulthood.

In 2001, Moore spoke to the United States Department of Agriculture concerning their practice of over-looking male-to-female misrepresentation. She has worked with HIPS (Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive), an organization that assists over 8,000 sex workers annually in the Washington D.C. area, providing health care materials to those on the street. Currently, Moore works in the entertainment industry and volunteers for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), a group dedicated to promoting fair and inclusive representation of homosexuals in the media.
