nathantrice/RITUALS Dance Company Will Explore Grief In “Mothers” Ballet, Friday, February 10, 2006

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The internationally recognized New York-based dance company nathantrice/RITUALS will perform their ballet "Mothers" on Friday, February 10, 8:00-8:45 p.m. in the New Hackensack Studio Theater. Immediately following, founder/director Nathan Trice will lead the post-show discussion, "Mourning into Dancing: Exploring Loss/Grief through Dance." These events are free and open to the public, but seating is limited and reservations are necessary through the Vassar College department of dance (845-437-7470).

With choreography by Trice and music by Hans Zimmer, "Mothers" explores how six women mourned their noted sons — Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesus Christ, Ernesto "Che" Guevara, Tupac Shakur, and Adolph Hitler. The ballet is inspired by Trice's belief that these women have not been recognized for contributing to their son's lives.

Trice founded nathantrice/RITUALS in 1998 as an artists' cooperative, to produce programs that incorporate visual, audio, sensory, and theatrical ("V.A.S.T.") elements. To date, the company has toured throughout the United States, and in Bermuda, Japan, Argentina, and Aruba.

Nathan Trice has taught and choreographed at the New School for Social Research, Jacobs Pillow, the Hip Hop Theater Festival and the Kennedy Center. He has performed with the MOMIX Dance Company, Complexions, Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theater, Donald Byrd/The Group, and the Burnt Sugar Arkestra. Trice began training in 1989 under Aulani Chun at Mesa College, San Diego, California, and later completed the Certificate Program in Dance at the Alvin Ailey Dance Center in New York City.

Vassar's New Hackensack Studio Theater is located off the intersection of New Hackensack Road and Route 376 (in the former Poughkeepsie Day School building), adjacent to the Vassar College security offices.
