Vassar College Confers 670 Bachelor’s Degrees
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 22, 2005) — President Frances Daly Fergusson presided today over the 141st Vassar College commencement ceremony, and the conferral of the Bachelor of Arts degree to 670 graduating students, on the grounds of the college's outdoor amphitheater.
Among Vassar's class of 2005:
- Sixty-six students were elected to Phi Beta Kappa for overall academic achievement, with majors in Africana Studies (1), American Culture (1), Anthropology (2), Art (2), Asian Studies (1), Astronomy (1), Biochemistry (1), Biology (1), Classics (1), Cognitive Science (2), Computer Science (2), Drama (1), Economics (7), English (9), Environmental Studies (2), Film (1), French (3), Geography (1), German Studies (1), Hispanic Studies (2), History (3), Independent Program (1), International Studies (1), Italian (2), Japanese (2), Latin American Studies (1), Mathematics (4), Music (4), Philosophy (2), Physics (1), Political Science (5), Psychology (5), Religion (3), Science, Technology, and Society (1), Sociology (1), and Urban Studies (3), Women's Studies (1).
- The college's Phi Beta Kappa Prize for 2005 was awarded to Steven Henry Gilhool, of Wynnewood, PA, who majored in Astronomy, Physics, and Japanese.
- Twelve graduates were elected to the Sigma Xi national honor society for the sciences, with majors in Astronomy (3), Biochemistry (4), Biology (1), Geology (2), Mathematics (3), and Physics (3).
- Four graduates were selected for both Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
- One hundred and forty-one graduates were awarded General Honors.
