Play and Vigil Will Honor World AIDS Day

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Two performances of Dan Gallagher's AIDS-education play "Between the Seams" will mark the thirteenth annual World AIDS Day in the Vassar College Chapel, at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 1. Professional actors, live music, and dramatic lighting highlight the production, which will be shown free and open to the public.

A quilt in which each square represents a person who died of AIDS, serves as the backdrop for Gallagher's work, which ties together the stories of AIDS victims from different ethnicities, genders, ages, and sexual orientations. The play's characters emerge from the quilt to address how they were infected with the HIV virus, and what living with AIDS was like.

An actor, choreographer, and AIDS educator, Gallagher particularly wrote "Between the Seams" for adolescents, and the work has already been preformed in several middle and high schools throughout New York's Hudson Valley. AIDS-Related Community Services (ARCS) and the Dutchess County HIV Planning Council present "Between the Seams" through a grant from the Dyson Foundation, and with support from the Vassar College AIDS Education Committee

World AIDS Day will also be observed in Poughkeepsie with a 5:30 p.m. candlelight memorial vigil at the Family Partnership Center, 29 North Hamilton Street, co-sponsored by local AIDS service organizations and community partners. World AIDS Day was established in 1993 to spotlight HIV and AIDS prevention and education.
