Egypt-based International Relations Scholar to Discuss Mideast Politics

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — International relations scholar M. Glen Johnson, the founding Executive Director of the Center for American Studies and Research at the American University in Cairo. will discuss “Shaping Democracy in the Middle East: A View From Egypt,” on Tuesday, September 13, 2005, at 5:30 p.m., in the Villard Room of the College Center. The event is free and open to the public.

From his Cairo post, where he began in spring 2004, “Glen Johnson has had an exceptional vantage point for the many changes at work in the Middle East,” said Martin Charwat, a former U.S. foreign service office, and now the president of the Mid-Hudson World Affairs Council, which is co-sponsoring Johnson’s talk with Vassar College. “He has witnessed movement toward democracy not only in Egypt. but also in Iraq and Lebanon. It will be extremely meaningful to hear him describe how these changes have been experienced and viewed in Egypt, and throughout the Middle East.

Dr. Johnson, an emeritus professor of political science and international politics at Vassar, is the author of several books and numerous articles on U.S. foreign policy, international human rights, the United Nations, Indian foreign policy, and the former untouchables in India. His most recent book, The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights: A History Of Its Creation And Implementation, 1948-1998 (UNESCO, 1998), which examines the origins and development of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, has been translated into a number of languages.

Johnson has been a Fulbright Scholar on two occasions, most recently as Director of the American Studies Research Center at the University of Hyderabad, India, from 1990-1993.He taught for more than 30 years at Vassar, where he is the professor emeritus of political science and international politics on the Shirley Ecker Boskey chair, and twice served as acting president of the college (1997-98, 2003-2004).
