POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (October 25, 2004) — The ARTEK early music ensemble will perform "I Don't Want to Love," an evening of madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi and others, at Vassar College on Saturday, November 13th, at 8:00 p.m. in the Martel Recital Hall of the Skinner Hall of Music. Earlier in the day, at 1:00 p.m., ARTEK will conduct a master class on baroque music, and both events are free and open to the public.
ARTEK began and gained its name twenty years ago from "The Art of the Early Keyboard" chamber music concert series held in New York City. Under the direction of Gwendolyn Toth, ARTEK has grown into one of America's premier early music organizations, with critical praise from the New York Times and a year-round schedule of performances.
The ensemble's first commercial recording, a 2-cd set of Monteverdi's opera Orfeo (Lyrichord Records, 1995), was notable not only as the first American recording of the opera, but also as one of a mere handful of opera recordings directed by a woman. The following year released the ARTEK recording Italian Virtuoso Love Songs of the 17th Century, with countertenor and Vassar College professor Drew Minter, and both recordings have been favorably received.
In 1997 and 1998 ARTEK performed with the prestigious Mark Morris Dance Group throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, and most recently the ensemble became artists-in-residence at the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Manhattan, where they regularly perform in the midday "Midtown Concerts" series.
