POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (September 13, 2004) — Sisters Rachel (vocals) and Sara (violin) Caswell will bring their jazz quintet to the Martel Recital Hall at Vassar College's Skinner Hall of Music on Saturday, September 18 at 8:00 p.m. At 2:00 the following afternoon, the Caswell sisters will also present a jazz master class at Skinner Hall.
Their mentor, renowned jazz cellist and Indiana University music professor David Baker, describes a connection so strong between the Caswell sisters that, "One of them will initiate something and the other manages, through some mystical, magical way, to arrive at the same point."
Sara Caswell's debut album First Song (Double-Time Records) came out in 2003, and her national touring has included a Carnegie Hall performance with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops Allstars. Sara has also performed with Charlie Byrd, John Clayton, Claude Williams, and Ingrid Jensen, and as a student received several awards from Down Beat magazine.
Rachel Caswell has been praised for her deft ability to scat and interpret jazz classics, and has also released one recording, Some Other
Time. She has appeared with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, John Blake Jr., Ingred Jensen, Curtis Fuller, and the Billy Taylor Trio, and at numerous jazz festivals. In 1997, she was selected as one of two vocalists for the Thelonius Monk Institute Jazz Colony and won the Hilton Head Jazz Society Scholarship.
