Nine Art Professors Combine for Varied Exhibition

Paintings, photography, sculpture, metal work, and architectural drawing and modeling are featured in the faculty group show "Vassar Studio Art Colleagues," running through September 21 in the James W. Palmer III '90 Gallery of Vassar's College Center. The exhibit ion features works by Vassar professors Richard Bosman, Mark Briscoe, Peter Charlap, Judy Linn, Laura Newman, Barry Price, Harry Roseman, George Rush, and Gina Ruggeri.

Among the works, Judy Linn has framed two of her black and white photographs side-by-side to juxtapose the horizon line shared by the two "constructed landscapes." In Linn's inventive still photo of a television screen showing the film "Thief," actor James Cann appears to have become a cyclops.

Laura Newman was inspired by homing pigeons circling outside her studio window when she painted "Birds 2," an Asian-influenced acrylic polymer and mixed media piece on canvas. Her untitled watercolor was created at Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keefe painted in New Mexico. To reflect on the surrounding rock formations, Newman began by pouring watercolor pigments and eventually brought in acrylic polymer paint.

Gina Ruggeri contributed "Rockpile" to the exhibition, a mounted ultra-thin Mylar cutout that appears to be painted on a wall. "It's scaled to life size, and has a three-dimensional quality, yet is emphatically flat at the same time," explained Ruggeri. "The result is a kind of trompe l'oeil visual paradox. The wall itself becomes the spatial field in which the image floats, creating an overlap between physical and pictorial space."

An artists' reception for the exhibition will be held in the College Center's Palmer Gallery on Monday September 15, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The gallery is open seven days a week from noon to 6:00 p.m. Call the campus activities office at (845) 437-5370 to arrange alternate viewing times, and for directions and other gallery information.
