Carol Willis, an architectural and urban historian, and the highly praised founder of the Skyscraper Museum, will discuss the World Trade Center and lower Manhattan development in her talk "About the Towers" on Thursday October 2 at 6:00 p.m. in Taylor Hall.
The New York Times described Willis as "the brilliant and energetic woman who created the Skyscraper Museum in 1996 from nothing but her imagination, her passion for New York architecture, and her belief in the importance of history and the value of the public realm."
Willis' book Form Follows Finance: Skyscrapers and Skylines in New York and Chicago in 1995 received an American Institute of Architects award and was named "Best Book on North American Urbansim" by the Urban History Association. She is also the editor of Building the Empire State, a book on the construction of New York's signature skyscraper.
For more than 20 years Willis has researched, taught, and written about the history of American city building, and she's currently an adjunct associate professor of urban studies at Columbia University. From 1979-1991 she taught courses on the history of architecture at New York's Parson School of Design, and for eleven summers conducted architectural walking tours in Paris for the college.
