A symposium on Frederic Edwin Church will be held at Vassar College, The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, on April 26, 10 a.m.

A symposium on Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church will be held at Vassar College, The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, in collaboration with the Olana Partnership, on Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. Titled "Frederic Edwin Church: Exotic Impressions of the Caribbean and South America," the symposium will feature three world-renowned curators: Franklin Kelly, curator of American and British paintings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Theodore E. Stebbins, curator of American painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; and Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser, deputy director and chief curator at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut.

The inspiration for the symposium is the current exhibition at the Lehman Loeb Art Center of Church's "Vale of St. Thomas, Jamaica," 1867, on loan from the Wadsworth Atheneum. Mr. Kelly, who has written extensively on Church, will speak on "New World Visions: The Landscapes of Frederic Church." Mr. Stebbins, a foremost authority on American art, will discuss "Frederic Church's Extraordinary Sketching Techniques." Ms. Kornhauser, who curated the outstanding Marsden Hartley exhibition currently at the Wadsworth Atheneum, will comment on "Frederic Church's Vale of St.
Thomas and the Legacy of Slavery." The symposium will be moderated by Karen Lucic, professor of art at Vassar.

The symposium, which is open to the general public, will begin at 10 a.m. in Taylor Hall, The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center. Tickets are $10.
