Vassar College Confers 616 Bachelor of Arts Degrees

President Frances Daly Fergusson presided today over the 139th Vassar College commencement ceremony, and the conferral of the Bachelor of Arts degree to 616 graduating students, on the grounds of the college's outdoor theater.

Among Vassar's class of 2003:

  • Sixty-two students were elected to Phi Beta Kappa for overall academic achievement, with majors in Africana Studies (2), American Culture (1), Anthropology (1), Art (1), Asian Studies (1), Biochemistry (1), Biology (2), Biopsychology (1), Chemistry (2), Classics (1), Computer Science (2), Drama (1), Economics (5), English (9), Environmental Studies (1), Film (1), French (2), Geology (1), German Studies (1), Hispanic Studies (2), History (2), Independent Program (2), International Studies (2), Italian (1), Latin American Studies (1), Mathematics (2), Philosophy (4), Physics (3), Political Science (2), Psychology (5), Religion (1), Russian Studies (1), Sociology (3), and Urban Studies (3).
  • The college's Phi Beta Kappa Prize for 2003 was awarded to Matthew Michael Fitsko of New Braunfels, TX, who double majored in Physics and English.
  • Twelve graduates were elected to the Sigma Xi national honor society for the sciences, with majors in Anthropology (2), Astronomy (2), Biochemistry (1), Chemistry (4), Computer Science (1), Environmental Studies (1), Geology (2), Mathematics (1), and Physics (2).
  • Seven graduates were selected for both Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
  • One hundred and thirty students were awarded General Honors.
