The Vassar College Bookstore will welcome local award-winning photographer and book illustrator Myles C. Pinkney Saturday, April 5, from noon until 1 p.m. The bookstore is in College Center.
Pinkney, whose studio is in Poughkeepsie, will talk about the children's books he has collaborated on with his wife, author Sandra L. Pinkney, and sign copies of their books, "A Rainbow All Around Me" and "Shades of Black." Myles photo-illustrated his first children's book in 1997, "It's Raining Laughter"written by Nikki Grimes, published by Dial Books for Young Readers. Myles followed that initial book with several others; however, in 2000, Myles completed a special book, authored by his wife, Sandra. Titled "Shades of Black," published by Scholastic Inc., this is a book celebrating the diversity of black children. This book was positively received by critics and readers. Of all the awards, the most notable one is the 2001 NAACP Image Award for Children's Literary Work. Myles and Sandra joined forces again for their second book "A Rainbow All Around Me," which has been nominated for the 2003 NAACP Image Award for Children's Literary Work.
Myles has exhibited his work throughout the country. He has also spoken at educational workshops and schools, and on several television talk shows such as the Today Show on NBC.
