Haitian Art Exhibition and Sale at Vassar College

The second annual exhibit of Haitian artwork will be on display in the James W. Palmer III '90 Gallery at Vassar College from Monday, April 7, through Wednesday, April 9.

Following the exhibit, the artwork will go on sale in Ely Hall on the Vassar campus. Hours for the sale are Friday, April 11, from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.

The exhibit and sale will feature more than 200 paintings by a wide variety of artists as well as an assortment of handpainted crafts and ironware. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the education and feeding of school children in Cherma_tre, a remote and desperately poor village in northwest Haiti. It is hoped that this annual art sale will eventually enable a permanent school building to be erected in the village.

The 2003 Haitian Art Exhibit and Sale is part of a week of events related to Haiti, called the Vassar Haiti Project, which is being planned and sponsored by a multi-constituent college committee. Art is one of the few remaining exports in Haiti, where the jobless rate has climbed to 65%; those who do work earn an average of US $1.00 a day. ÅgDespite the poverty and political turmoil, the dignity and spirit of the Haitian people remains powerfully strong, vibrant and freeÅh said Andrew Meade, Assistant to the Dean of the College and chair of the Vassar Haiti Project, after his recent trip to Haiti.

Further details about the sale, accompanying events, as well as the project in Haiti it benefits can be found on the Web at http://outreach.vassar.edu/haitiproject. For additional information, call the Assistant to the Dean of the College, Andrew Meade at (845) 437-5831.
