Nathan Englander, acclaimed author of ‘For the Relief of Unbearable Urges,’ will read from and discuss his work Tuesday, April 1

Nathan Englander, author of the acclaimed collection "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges," will give the 2003 Sitomer Lecture on Tuesday, April 1, at 5:30 p.m. in the Villard Room in Main Building.

Englander's story collection was published by Knopf in April 1999, and was an international bestseller. In the United States "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges" was reprinted eleven times in hardback, and the Vintage paperback edition is in its sixth printing. Englander was the winner of the 2002 Bard Fiction Prize; the PEN/Faulkner Malamud Award for Excellence in Short Fiction, 2000; and the Goldberg Foundation Prize for Jewish Fiction. He is now working on his first novel, entitled "The Ministry of Special Cases," also to be published by Knopf.

Englander grew up in New York and currently lives in Jerusalem, Israel. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and a recipient of the Pushcart Prize. His stories have appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, American Short Fiction, and Story magazine.

The Dr. Maurice Sitomer Lecture Fund was established at Vassar College in 1984 with a gift from Arlene Sitomer to honor her late husband,

who was a community leader in Poughkeepsie. The purpose of the lecture fund is to invite speakers to the campus who enlighten, inspire, and encourage understanding of Jewish culture and concerns. The annual lecture is free and open to the public.
