Sr. Helen Prejean, C.S.J., best known as the author of "Dead Man Walking: An Eye Witness Account of the Death Penalty in the U.S." (Random House, 1993, Vintage, 1994), will give the 2002-03 Danforth Lecture at Vassar Thursday, April 3, at 5 p.m., in the Chapel. The lecture is free and open to the public. It is funded by the Danforth Endowment.
Prejean's book was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and made into a motion picture. The recipient of 32 honorary degrees, Prejean is honorary chairperson of the Moratorium Campaign, a group working towards a moratorium on the death penalty at the state and national levels.
Prejean's lecture topic, "Dead Man Walking—the Journey Continues," will explore the integration of commitment and practice, particularly in public life. Following her talk, Prejean will sign copies of her book, "Dead Man Walking." All proceeds from sales will go to the Moratorium Campaign's organizing work against the death penalty.
