Rubén Martínez, author of "Crossing Over: A Mexican Family on the Migrant Trail," and "The Other Side," will speak at Vassar College on Friday, February 21, at 4:30 p.m., in Taylor Hall, room 203. His talk, "Migrant Matters: What the Newest Americans Tell Us about Ourselves," is presented as part of the "Urban Talk Series" by the Vassar College Program in Urban Studies, and is open to the public free of charge.
Martínez is associate professor of creative writing at the University of Houston and associate editor at Pacific News Service. For the last two years, Martínez has been lecturing on immigration-related topics and touring with his band, the Border Balladeers, performing a stage version of his book "Border Ballad," a story set to music, based on Mexican migration narratives. He has been a guest commentator on National Public Radio, was news editor at the L.A. Weekly, and won an Emmy Award as host for the KCET (PBS-Los Angeles) politics and culture series, "Life & Times." Martínez is currently working on his newest book "The New Americans.
