Area artist, and Poughkeepsie resident, Franc Palaia will display his most recent works, "Illuminated Landscapes," in the James W. Palmer III `90 Gallery at Vassar College. The exhibition opens Friday, February 14, and runs through Thursday, March 20. A reception for Palaia, on Thursday, February 20, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., is open to the public.
The mixed media photo sculptural installation represents Palaia's most recent works. The three-dimensional wall and floor pieces are fitted with light boxes that house luminous backlit digital transparencies. The technique uses mirrors and involves removing the reflective metallic coating to allow light to pass through creating durable transparencies known as "duratrans."
Several of the images are broad panoramic views of famous Hudson Valley bridges in addition to ancient Roman aqueducts, Tuscan towers, Italian landscapes, and contemporary American relics. The exhibit uses common everyday objects, combined with classic landscapes to create an illuminating blend of elegance and humor.
Palaia is one of the founding members of the City Art Partnership. Some of his projects include "ArtWalk" and the "Main Street Mural." His work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Museum, and Dutchess Community College.
