Vassar Modfest 2003 opens Friday, January 24

Performers include Vassar students (the Mahagonny Ensemble and Chorus and the Vassar Orchestra) and Vassar faculty (Sauer, Blanca Uribe, Todd Crow, Richard Wilson, and Frank Cassara) as well as guest artists Katharina Wolpe, Sophie Shao, David Starobin, and the Mannes Trio. Annea Lockwood, recently retired from Vassar, will return with a video/audio installation. The Fisher Fund supports this series.

Modfest concerts, in the Skinner Recital Hall, are:

• Friday, January 24, 8 p.m., Sauer, piano, will perform works by to include Beethoven, Debussy, Schoenberg, and Cuckson.
• Saturday, January 25, 11 a.m. Frank Cassara. Workshop on contemporary
  percussion techniques and repertoire.
• Saturday, January 25, 1:30 p.m. Annea Lockwood, composer, and Paul Ryan, video artist, will present Bow Falls (2002-3), a video/audio study of water flow patterns in the rapids of Banff complemented by Lockwood's tape piece, 'floating world' 2000.
• Saturday, January 25, 8 p.m. Chamber Concert. Program to include Bartok's
  Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion with works
  by Suzanne Sorkin, Elliott Carter, and Debussy.
  Performed by Todd Crow, Blanca Uribe, Rolf
  Schulte, Frank Cassara, Dominic Donato, Richard
  Wilson and others.
• Sunday, January 26, 3 p.m. Katharina Wolpe, piano, will perform works by Anton Webern and Stefan Wolpe.
• Friday, January 31, 8 p.m. the Mannes Trio (Hiroko Yajima, violin, Wilhelmina Smith, cello, and Thomas Sauer, piano) will perform works by Rorem, Cuckson, and Wilson.
• Saturday, February 1, 11 a.m., guitarist David Starobin will present a workshop on contemporary guitar techniques and repertoire.
• Saturday, February 1, 4 p.m., Starobin, assisted by Allegra Starobin, percussion, will perform works by Elliott Carter, Melinda Wagner, Per Norgard, Poul Ruders, Bryan Johanson, David Liptak, Michael Starobin, and David Starobin.
• Saturday, February 1, 8 p.m. The Vassar Orchestra, conducted by Eduardo Navega, and the Vassar Mahagonny Ensemble, with Yaniv Segal '03 and William Barclay '03, conducting, will perform works by Barber, Hindemith, Bartok, and Prado.
• Sunday, February 2, 3 p.m. Sophie Shao, cello, assisted by Richard Wilson, piano, will perform works by Debussy, Carter, Britten, Crumb, Sorkin, and Wilson.
