"Teen Visions," an exhibition by students from the Art Institute of Mill Street Loft opens Tuesday, January 21, in the James W. Palmer III '90 Gallery at Vassar College. The exhibition, which runs through Sunday, February 9, includes works in portraiture, figure drawing, and photography. A reception for the artists and their instructors on Thursday, January 23, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., is open to the public.
The Art Institute of Mill Street Loft is a pre-college portfolio development program for teens, 14 to 19 years old, to help develop their ideas and build skills in the visual arts. The program helps high school students learn how an artist uses the creative process to make art. A major focus for the Art Institute is to help students prepare for advanced studies in the arts by developing a strong portfolio of their works that is required for acceptance by undergraduate art schools. "Our primary mission is to prepare our students to get into the best art schools," says Michael Gallo Farrell, photography instructor for the Art Institute.
The Art Institute has helped many local high school students advance their studies in art. Some of the institute's students have received scholarships to Pratt Institute, Carnegie Mellon, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Rochester
Institute of Technology, and other prestigious schools with reputable art studio programs. In 2002, 11 Art Institute students received combined scholarships totaling $672,000.
Mill Street Loft is a Poughkeepsie-based, nationally recognized, multi-arts educational center that is dedicated to bringing a wide range of creative, educational, and culturally enriching programs to diverse audiences throughout the Hudson Valley.
