Media studies scholar Robert McChesney will give a lecture titled "Media and the Crisis of U.S. Political Democracy" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 21, in room 200 of Rockefeller Hall at Vassar College.

The lecture is sponsored by the Media Studies Development Project. It is free and open to the public.

McChesney is one of the foremost scholars in media studies. He has spoken and written extensively about the history and political economy of media and was named one of the "Nine Pioneers of Mental Environmentalism" by "Adbusters Magazine' in 2001. He is currently research professor in the Institute of Communications Research and the Graduate School of Information and Library Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. McChesney is also co-editor of the independent socialist magazine "Monthly Review."

His books include "Rich Media, Poor Democracy: Communication Politics in Dubious Times" (University of Illinois Press) and "Telecommunications, Mass Media, and Democracy: The Battle for Control of U.S. Broadcasting, 1928-1935″ (Oxford University Press.)
