Chicago String Quartet will perform at Vassar, February 8

The Chicago String Quartet, accompanied by Larry Combs on clarinet and Gail Williams on horn, will perform on Friday, February 8, at 8 p.m. in the Skinner Recital Hall at Vassar College.
The quartet will perform works by Mozart, Brahms, and Wilson. Called "one of our civic treasures" by the Chicago Tribune, the quartet was recently featured on National Public Radio's "Performance Today" and is a returning guest of Vassar College.
Combs is a founding member of the Chicago Chamber Musicians. He has appeared as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra many times and has also appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Smithsonian Chamber Ensemble. In 1994 Combs, as part of an ensemble comprised of members of the orchestras of Chicago and Berlin, received a Grammy award for Best Chamber Music Performance for their interpretation of the chamber music of Mozart and Beethoven. His recordings as a soloist and as a chamber musician have been released on the Erato, Sony, Cedille, Crystal, and Summit labels.
Williams is a founding member of both the Chicago Chamber Musicians and the Summit Brass, a brass ensemble including musicians from the New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Saint Louis symphonies. She has performed as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Antonio Orchestra, and several smaller orchestras in the United States. She has made seven recordings with the Summit Brass and one solo album of contemporary music on the Summit Records label.
Richard Wilson joined the faculty of Vassar College in 1966 and is currently the Mary Conover Mellon Professor of Music at Vassar College. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1992 and since 1992 has been the composer-in-residence for the American Symphony Orchestra, where he composed his first opera. His compositions have been performed in major halls around the world, and his recordings can be found on the Peer Music label. This performance will be the premier of Wilson's "Canzona" for horn and string quartet.
