Political theorist Benjamin R. Barber will discuss terrorism in a lecture at Vassar College at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, in Taylor Hall, room 102. The lecture is sponsored by the programs in American Culture and International Studies as part of a new course on terrorism which is being offered in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It is free of charge and open to the public.
Barber, a professor at the University of Maryland, is one of the most distinguished political theorists of the 21st century. He is the author of the international best seller "Jihad vs. McWorld: How Globalism and Tribalism Are Reshaping the World," and, most recently, "The Truth of Power: Intellectual Affairs in the Clinton White House."
He served as director of the Walt Whitman Center for the Culture and Politics of Democracy at Rutgers University for 12 years, where he also held the Walt Whitman chair of political science. Barber has consulted with political and civic leaders, including former President Bill Clinton, and is the author of 14 books.
His honors include Guggenheim, Fulbright, and Social Science Research Council fellowships, the Palmes Academiques (Chevalier) of the French government, and the Berlin Prize of the American Academy of Berlin. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from Harvard University, and a B.A. and honorary doctorate from Grinnell College.
