‘Structures: About Abstract Painting’ opens at Vassar’s Palmer Gallery, January 14, followed by a panel discussion, January 30

"Structures: About Abstract Painting," a group show curated by Linda Francis and Marjorie Welish of the Pratt Institute, is at the James W. Palmer III '90 Gallery in the College Center at Vassar College through Thursday, February 7. "Structures," an exhibition of seven abstract painters, explores the variety of approaches and ideas that contemporary abstraction deals with; such as form, concept, and content.

There will be a panel discussion featuring the seven artists in the show on Wednesday, January 30, at 3:30 p.m. in Taylor Hall, room 203, followed by a gallery reception at 5 p.m.

"Structures" includes the work of Michael Brennen, Linda Francis, Nancy Hayes, James Hyde, Thomas Nozkowski, Marjorie Welish, and Kes Zapkus.

Brennan has exhibited in New York and Belgium and was profiled in a piece by Aruna D'Souza, titled "Michael Brennan at Lucas Schoormans," in "Art in America."

Francis has exhibited in at the Nicholas Davies and Leubsdorf galleries in New York and at the Museum of Modern Art in Spain. She has been featured in "Art in America," and in "A Dictionary of Avant-Gardes."

Haynes' work has been exhibited at the Stark Gallery in New York and in Switzerland, Austria, and Texas. Her work has been featured in "Artnews" and "Art and Design" magazine.

Hyde has exhibited at the Zwemmer Gallery in London and the Brent Sikkema Gallery in New York. His paintings are included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami. The Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz exhibited Nozkowski's paintings in 2001. His work has also shown at the Max Protetch Gallery in New York and at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Welish's work has been exhibited at the Elizabeth Foundation Studio Center and Donahue/Sosinski Art, both in New York. She has been reviewed in the "New York Times."

Zapkus has exhibited at the Condeso/Lawler, Ardre Zarre, and John Good galleries in New York and has been reviewed in "Art in America."
