Jewish women in pre-Holocaust Poland to be discussed at Vassar, April 22

"From Tradition to Radicalism: Jewish Women in Pre-Holocaust Poland," is the subject of a lecture by Yale professor Paula Hyman at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22, in the Villard Room, Main Building, Vassar College. Hyman is the Lucy Moses Professor of Modern Jewish History at Yale University.

Hyman has been a professor at Yale since 1986. Prior to that she taught at Columbia University and was the Dean of the Seminary College of Jewish Studies and an associate professor of history at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards and has written and spoken extensively on modern Jewish culture, particularly the roles played by women and gender.

Her latest project, "My Life as a Radical Jewish Woman: Memoirs of a Zionist Feminist in Poland" (Indiana University Press) translates the biography of Zionist activist and feminist leader Puah Rakovsky. This is the first English translation of Rakovsky's book, originally written in Yiddish.

The Dr. Maurice Sitomer Lecture Fund was established at Vassar College in 1984 with a gift from Arlene Sitomer to honor her late husband, a community leader in Poughkeepsie with a strong appreciation for Vassar College. The purpose of the lecture fund is to invite speakers to the campus who enlighten, inspire, and encourage understanding of Jewish culture and concerns. The lecture is free and open to the public.
