Risks and benefits of transgenic crops to be discussed at Vassar, April 24

"Transgenic Crops: Who Takes the Risks and Who Gets the Benefits?" will be the subject of a lecture by Fred Gould, a professor of entomology at North Carolina State University, on Wednesday, April 24, at 5:30 p.m. in the Sanders Auditorium in Sanders Classroom at Vassar College.

The lecture, sponsored by the programs in environmental science and environmental studies, is free and open to the public.

Gould's research focuses on ecological, genetic, and chemical aspects of plant, pest, and bio-control interactions in corn, cotton, and potato systems. Recently he has been working on the sustainable use of genetically engineered crops.

Gould was a consultant for the World Bank on genetically engineered crops, and from 1999-2000 he was a member of the recommendations committee on genetically modified pest-protected crops for the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council.
