Vassar Choir and Festival Orchestra to perform, April 20

The Vassar College Choir and Festival Orchestra will perform Franz Joseph Haydn's famous oratorio "The Creation" on Saturday, April 20, at 8 p.m. in the Skinner Recital Hall at Vassar College. Conductor Charles Kamm will be joined by soprano Karen Holvik, tenor Brad Peloquin, and bass-baritone Robert Osborne.

"The Creation" was composed for London audiences in 1799. Its libretto borrows not only from the biblical creation story in Genesis, but also from John Milton's "Paradise Lost." Out of orchestral chaos in the opening of the oratorio, soloists and choir sing of the creation of the world in its entire detailed and varied splendor. Familiar grand choruses penetrate the story, culminating in a great song of thanksgiving and joy. "The Creation" is certainly one of the most uplifting works of the classical era.

Kamm conducts the auditioned Vassar College choir and the select Vassar Madrigal Singers. He is also the founder and director of Reredos Male Vocal Ensemble, based in Boston. Kamm is visiting assistant professor of music and director of choral activities at Vassar College. He concludes his duties and will leave the college at semester's end to pursue further advanced academic studies.
