21st Century American economic growth is the subject of a national economist’s address at Vassar College, December 9

Economist J. Bradford DeLong will present a lecture on "American Economic Growth in the First Decades of the 21st Century" in room 300 of Rockefeller Hall, at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 9, at Vassar College.

The Department of Economics sponsors the annual Martin H. Crego Lecture series. The presentation is free and open to the public.

DeLong, professor of economics at the University of California at Berkeley and co-editor of the "Journal of Economic Perspectives," is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is also a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

From 1993 to 1995, DeLong served in the U.S. government as deputy assistant secretary of the treasury for economic policy, reporting to Assistant Secretary Alicia Munnell. He has worked on behalf of the Clinton administration's 1993 budget, the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, the North American Free Trade Agreement, macroeconomic policy, and the health care reform effort.

Before DeLong joined the Department of the Treasury, he was the Danziger Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Harvard University. Additionally he has been a John M. Olin Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research, an assistant professor of economics at Boston University, and a lecturer in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

DeLong has taught finance, macroeconomics, economic history, and social theory. His writing focuses on the evolution of the U.S. and other nations' stock markets, the course of long-run economic growth, economic policy and theory, and the changing nature of the American business cycle.

DeLong has been published extensively in journals such as "Foreign Affairs," the "Journal of Economic Perspectives," "First Monday," "Reducing Inflation," the "Journal of Law and Economics," and the "Journal of Economic History." His current projects involve two books: an intermediate macroeconomics textbook called "Macroeconomics," and "The Economic History of the Twentieth Century: Slouching Towards Utopia."

DeLong holds a Ph.D. (1987), an MA (1984), and a BA summa cum laude (1982) from Harvard University.
