Guest violinist in concert with the Vassar College Orchestra, November 23

With guest violinist Betty-Jean Hagen, the Vassar College Orchestra will present Beethoven's "Violin Concert in D, Op. 61″ on Saturday, November 23, at 8 p.m. in the Skinner Recital Hall at Vassar.

The orchestra will be conducted by visiting assisting professor Eduardo Navega with Hagen appearing in a solo performance. Sponsored by the Department of Music, the recital is free and open to the public. The evening's program also includes Amy March Beach's "Symphony No. 2 E minor."

The Vassar College Orchestra is comprised of 60 students. Conductor Navega is the director of orchestral activities at Vassar College. He has been an assistant conductor with the Campinas Symphony Orchestra at the University of Brazil since 1989, although he is now on a leave of absence. Presently, he is completing his doctor of musical arts degree in orchestral conducting at the Hart School of Music.

For the past 40 years Hagen has performed all over the world with such notable orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Hague Philharmonic, the Birmingham Orchestra, and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

Hagen has been the recipient of both the Leventritt and Naumburg awards in New York, the Carl Flesch Medal in London, the Pathe-Marconi Prize in Paris, a Tchaikowsky Medal in Moscow, and the Harriet Cohen Medal as the outstanding woman musician of the British Commonwealth.
