POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - David Chidester, professor at the Centre for the Study of Religion at the University of Capetown, South Africa, and director of the Institute for Comparative Religion in South Africa, will give a talk titled "Blood and Money: Elementary Forms of Political Economy of the Sacred," on Wednesday, November 20, at 5 p.m. in Taylor Hall, room 203, Vassar College.
Chidester's lecture, part of the Wood Religion Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.
Among 14 authored or edited volumes, Chidester wrote "Salvation and Suicide: An Interpretation of Jim Jones, the Peoples Temple, and Jonestown" (1991), "Savage Systems: Colonialism and Religion in Southern Africa" (1996), and "Shots in the Streets: Violence and Religion in Southern Africa" (1991). His areas of study include sacred space, comparative religion in South Africa, and religious education.
