Kaiulani Lee will give a performance of "A Sense of Wonder," the one-woman play she wrote based on the life and works of Rachel Carson, on Wednesday, November 6, at 7:30 PM in Sanders Classroom Auditorium at Vassar College. The Department of Geology and Geography, and the Environmental Studies Program present the performance.
"A Sense of Wonder" has been performed at over one hundred universities, dozens of high schools, the Smithsonian Institute, the Albert Schweitzer Conference, the United Nations, the Sierra Club's Centennial in San Francisco, and at the Department of the Interior's 150th anniversary celebration.
Rachel Carson, the paramount character and inspiration for the play, was a great force behind the environmental movement. A marine biologist and zoologist, she is considered to be one of the great poets and writers of the natural world. Her 1962 publication of "Silent Spring" brought the dangers of chemical pesticides in the ecosystem to public consciousness.
Kaiulani has toured the country, teaching and guest lecturing at many universities. Nominated for the Drama Desk Award on Broadway and winner of the OBIE Award for outstanding achievement off-Broadway, she has performed in over a dozen on and Off-Broadway productions.
Kaiulani has fifteen feature films to her credit, including "The Seduction of Joe Tynan," "The Fan," "Garp," "Cujo," and "Compromising Positions." She has appeared on television in guest starring roles for the series Law & Order, The Equalizer, Tales from the Dark Side, and The Waltons.
As a student of Lee Strasberg, Sandy Meisner, Jerzy Grotowski and Uta Hagen, Kaiulani earned her BA from American University, and Honorary Doctorate of the Arts from Bowdoin College.
