Alan D. Taylor, co-author of "The Win-Win Solution" will deliver a lecture on "The Mathematics of Voting" at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 31, in Taylor Hall, room 203, at Vassar College.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is cosponsored by the Vassar College Chapter of Sigma Xi and by the Vassar Program in Science, Technology, and Society.
Taylor has published a variety of books and articles, many of which demonstrate the close relationship between mathematics and social affairs. Educated at Dartmouth College, his fields of study now include set theory, logic, simple games, social choice, and mathematical political science.
"The Win-Win Solution" (Norton, 2000) tackles the middle ground between winning and losing in negotiation, answering questions about when you should or should not compromise. The book patented an algorithm that guarantees that both parties will walk away with as much of the "win-win" potential as possible.
In their review of Taylor's book, the New Yorker wrote, "One can hire a lawyer and spend years and thousands of dollars fighting [in a divorce], or one can make use of a neat new formula devised by Steven Brams and Alan Taylor."
Currently, Taylor is the Marie Louise Bailey Professor of Mathematics at Union College in Schenectady, New York.
