Art Spiegelman, Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of "Maus," will give the Helen Forster Novy lecture, titled "Comix 101," at Vassar College on Monday, October 28, at 5 p.m. in the Taylor Auditorium, Taylor Hall.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Dean of the Faculty and the Department of Art.
Spiegelman won a Pulitzer Prize for "Maus," his Holocaust comic book narrative, in 1992. In "Maus" and "Maus II," Jews are portrayed as mice and Nazis as cats. Spiegelman created this unusual and controversial context for a powerful narrative. In recent years, he has illustrated many covers for the New Yorker magazine. His comics are best known for their scratchboard, illustrative style and controversial content.
In his speech "Comix 101," Spiegelman takes his audience on a chronological tour of the evolution of comics, all the while explaining the value of this medium and why it should not be ignored. He believes that in our post-literate culture the importance of the comic is on the rise, for "comics echo the way the brain works. People think in iconographic images, not in holograms, and people think in bursts of language, not in paragraphs," he says.
