The Vassar College Choir and the Women's Chorus will present a concert of a cappella and accompanied motets, part songs, and folk music at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 25, in the Skinner Recital Hall of Vassar College. The concert is free and open to the public.
The recital includes musical selections spanning the eras between the Renaissance and the 20th century. The evening's program features a Palestrina Missa Brevis and the Britten Missa Brevis in D.
Thomas Brand, adjunct instructor of music, conducts the Vassar College Choir. Rebecca Rosenbaum, a graduate of the Vassar class of 1997, is the newly appointed director of choral activities and directs the Vassar Women's Chorus.
The Vassar College Choir is the college's auditioned, mixed, large choral ensemble. The ensemble numbers between 40 and 60 voices, representing all four classes. The choir toured England in March 2001.
The Vassar Women's Chorus was formed in the fall of 1997 and admits between 30 and 50 women. The ensemble performs on campus and travels. Last year the chorus sang at the
Festival of Treble Choruses at Smith College. This year's endeavors include a Spring Break singing tour of Puerto Rico.
In addition to serving as conductor, Brand is organist and choirmaster of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Cheshire, Connecticut, and is founder and artistic director the United Choir School in New Haven, Conn. He holds a bachelor's degree in music and a master's degree in choral conducting from Yale University.
Rosenbaum also teaches music theory. She received her B.A. in music from Vassar College and her MM and MMA in choral conducting from Yale University, where she is currently completing the doctoral program. She is also the music director of the Elm City Girl's Choir of New Haven.
