"Elizabeth Bishop's Brazil: Life in the Country of Carnival" is the title of Brazilian novelist and scholar Carmen Oliveira's lecture at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, in the faculty parlor, Main Building, Vassar College.
The lecture, sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, is free and open to the public.
Oliveira is the author of "Rare and Commonplace Flowers: The Story of Elizabeth Bishop and Lota de Macedo Soares." She is a professor of comparative literature and an authority on Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop.
A New York Times reviewer stated that "Rare and Commonplace Flowers" has become a Brazilian best seller, and one can see why. For although the book is superficially an exploration of a love affair, it is also deeply concerned with national identity, the nature of the Brazilian character, and the effort to build Brazilian cities."
