Tina Chancey, playing the rare pardessus de viole, and Webb Wiggins, harpsichord, will give a concert of French and Italian Baroque music at Vassar College's Skinner Hall at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 29. The concert is free and open to the public.
A hybrid of the violin and the viola, the pardessus de viole was created because custom forbade aristocratic 18th century French women from holding anything on their bare shoulders.
A specialist on early bowed string instruments, Chancey received two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts to play pardessus debut recitals at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Recital Hall. Her dissertation was written on the pardessus and she has recorded six suites
Wiggins is coordinator of the Early Music Program at the Peabody Conservatory, as well as a faculty member of the Oberlin College Baroque Performance Institute and the Amherst Early Music Institute. He has taught harpsichord at Princeton, George Mason Universities, the University of Pennsylvania, and at the Oberlin College Conservatory.
