Cellist Colin Carr and pianist Thomas Sauer to perform at Vassar’s Skinner Recital Hall, September 20

Cellist Colin Carr and pianist Thomas Sauer will perform works by Beethoven, Schumann, Cassado, and Britten at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 20, in the Skinner Recital Hall at Vassar College.

The concert, sponsored by the Department of Music, is free and open to the public. The program will include Beethoven Sonata in G minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 5, No. 2; Benjamin Britten Suite No. 3 for Solo Cello; and Schumann Fantasy Pieces, Op. 73.

The New York Times has praised Sauer, a visiting assistant professor of music at Vassar, for his "eloquent pianism". He is active as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. A member of the Mannes Trio, ensemble-in-residence at the Mannes College of Music in New York City, Sauer also collaborates frequently with noted instrumentalists such as violinist Midori and violist Misha Amory. Sauer is the artistic director of the Mannes Beethoven Institute and co-artistic director of the Chamber Music Quad Cities, a performing organization based in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa.

Carr has appeared throughout the world as soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and teacher. As a concert soloist, Carr has played with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, The Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony, and the orchestras of Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, Philadelphia, and Montreal. Recitals have taken him to major cities each season: he regularly performs in London, New York, and Boston. As a member of the Golub-Kaplan-Carr Trio, he recorded and toured extensively for 20 years. Carr recently formed the group Sequenza.

Carr is the winner of many prestigious international awards, including first prize in the Naumburg Competition, the Gregor Piatigorsky Memorial Award, and second prize in the Rostropovich International Cello Competition.
