Alexandra Gardner Awarded W.K. Rose Fellowship

Alexandra Gardner, a composer, has been awarded Vassar College's W.K. Rose Fellowship in the Creative Arts. Gardner is a member of the Vassar College class of 1990. She lives in Tacoma Park, Maryland.

The fellowship was established by a bequest from the estate of W.K. Rose, a distinguished scholar and teacher, who was a member of the Vassar English department. It was created to allow a worthy young artist to be free after college to pursue a career in the arts. It is open to graduating seniors and Vassar graduates who demonstrated a creative talent in writing, the visual arts or music composition during their years of undergraduate study. This year, the Rose Fellowship consists of an award of $40,000.

Gardner was recognized by the selection committee for her work in the field of music composition. As a composer and sound artist, Gardner has created music for performance and concert settings, dance, video, and radio. In addition to her studies at Vassar, Gardner has also attended the California Institute of the Arts and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Her works have been featured throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia at festivals and performance spaces such as the Aspen Music Festival and the Kennedy Center. Among her honors and awards are recognition by Meet the Composer and the American Composers Council. Gardner has been commissioned by such organizations as the SOLI Chamber Ensemble and the Smithsonian Institution.

Currently, Gardner is the sound engineer for "Soundprint," a radio documentary series that airs weekly across the U.S. on National Public Radio stations.
