Vassar choir and madrigal singers to perform at Manhattan church, February 11

The Vassar College Choir and Madrigal Singers will perform a concert of a capella works dating from the Renaissance to the present at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan on February 11, at 3 p.m.

The concert includes movements from the "Mass for Four Voices" by William Byrd, motets by Palestrina, Mendelssohn and Pablo Casals, "Some thoughts on Keats and Coleridge," by the late Earl Kim, as well as arrangements of folksongs and spirituals. Charles Kamm, director of choral activities and visiting assistant professor of music at Vassar College, conducts both ensembles.

The Vassar College Choir is the college's auditioned, mixed choral ensemble, made up of 52 singers representing all four classes, 27 majors, 22 states and two foreign countries. The group toured the East Coast in March, 1998, and will make a concert tour to England in March. The ensemble recently produced a compact disc, a compilation of live concert recordings from 1997 to 2000. The Vassar Madrigal Singers is a smaller select ensemble specializing in the Renaissance and chamber repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Kamm conducts both groups and teaches courses in conducting and theory. In addition to his work at Vassar, Kamm is the founder and director of Boston-based Reredos Male Vocal Ensemble, an octet of professional singers. He has directed the choirs at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum. The Church of the Holy Trinity is located at 316 East 88th Street in Manhattan. The concert is free and open to the public.
