"A Very Fine Negress: Race in a Room of One's Own," will be the title of a lecture by Jane Marcus on Thursday, March 1, at 5:30 p.m. in the Villard Room, Main Building, Vassar College. Her talk is free and open to the public.
Marcus, an English professor at the City University of New York and the City College of New York, has been a feminist critic since the 1970s. Her books include three volumes of essays on Virginia Woolf, "The Young Rebecca West," "Virginia Woolf and the Languages of Patriarchy," and "Art and Anger: Reading Like a Woman." She taught at the University of Texas and helped found women's studies programs at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Texas.
Works in process by Marcus include "Britannia Rules The Waves" (Rutgers University Press), "A Key to a Room of One's Own" (Feminist Press), and "White Looks: Modernism, Primitivism and Nancy Cunard" (Rutgers University Press).
