Nora Ephron to speak at Vassar College, March 27

Screenwriter, novelist, director, producer, and playwright Nora Ephron will give the Alex Krieger '95 Memorial Fund Lecture in the Skinner Recital Hall at Vassar College at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27.

One of the country's most respected screenwriters, Ephron has been nominated three times for Academy Awards in the category of best original screenplay; for "Silkwood" in 1983, with her sister Delia Ephron for "Sleepless in Seattle" in 1993, and for Rob Reiner's "When Harry Met Sally" in 1989.

She turned to directing in 1992 with her first feature film, "This is My Life," starring Julie Kavner. She followed it in 1993 with the very popular "Sleepless in Seattle," starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks,

In 1998, Ephron produced and co-wrote "You've Got Mail," starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Her other screenwriting credits include "Heartburn," her own novel, "Cookie," and "My Blue Heaven."

Beginning as a newspaper reporter for the New York Post, Ephron was a well-known journalist long before she wrote for the movies. She later became a contributing editor and columnist, then a senior editor and columnist for Esquire, and a contributing editor for New York Magazine. Two collections of her essays, "Crazy Salad" and "Scribble, Scribble," were best sellers.

The Alex Krieger '95 Memorial Fund lecture is named for a member of the Vassar College class of 1995 who was killed in an automobile accident in his freshman year. His parents established the fund in his memory to bring writers and humorists to the campus.
