“Prozac Backlash” discussed at Vassar College, April 2

Internationally known psychiatrist Joseph Glenmullen, author of "Prozac Backlash," will lead a discussion about the use of antidepressants in college populations at Vassar College at 4 p.m. Monday, April 2, in Rockefeller Hall (Room 300). Glenmullen's talk, which will be followed by a book signing, is sponsored by Vassar College Counseling Services as part of a seminar series meant to raise awareness of the impact and use of psychiatric drugs in college communities.

In a June 29, 2000 review in the New York Times, Janet Maslin described "Prozac Backlash: Overcoming the Dangers of Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and Other Antidepressants with Safe, Effective Alternatives" as "an important, deeply troubling examination of the means by which these drugs have become so widely disseminated, and the possible long-term toll they may take." According to Maslin, the book "makes a tough, persuasive case that the drugs are more dangerous than generally acknowledged, that patients and doctors are insufficiently informed about the risks and that drug companies devote vast amounts of money and energy to spin control."

Glenmullen, a clinical instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, is on the staff of Harvard University Health Services and is in private practice in Cambridge. Glenmullen also wrote "Sexual Mysteries: Tales of Psychotherapy."
