Dance Critic Deborah Jowitt to Speak at Vassar

Village Voice Dance critic and author Deborah Jowitt will present a lecture titled "Screaming Fits, Walking on Walls, and Men in Tutus: Postmodern Dance 1960-2001″ at 8 p.m. Monday, April 2, in Kenyon Hall at Vassar College.

Jowitt's talk, sponsored by the Department of Physical Education and Dance, will include a video presentation. It is free and open to the public.

Jowitt began dancing professionally in 1953, choreographing in 1962, and writing a regular dance column for the Village Voice in 1967. In the 1960s, she was a founding member of Dance Theater Workshop. Her articles on dance have appeared in numerous publications, among them the New York Times, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review, and Dance Research Journal, as well as in anthologies. She has published two collections: "Dance Beat" (1977) and "The Dance in Mind" (1985). A third book, "Time and the Dancing Image' (William Morrow, paperback, University of California Press), won the de la Torre Bueno Prize in 1988. Her most recent publication is "Meredith Monk" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1997), which she edited and for which she wrote the introduction.

Jowitt has lectured, taught, and conducted workshops at Harvard, Princeton, Barnard, the University of Copenhagen, the Walker Art Center, the University of Minnesota, and Bryn Mawr. She has taught courses in New York University's Department of Performance Studies and is a master teacher in the dance department of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
